There are many reasons to buy vintage – Retropolitan considers something to be vintage if it is at least 50 years old, or antique – over 100 years old, instead of new. Below are a few:
You can often furnish your home or dress yourself more cheaply if you buy from flatbox, super center or discount stores, but these purchases will most likely not stand the test of time, style- or quality-wise.
When you furnish or dress in antique or vintage, you are preserving s bit of history, perhaps even your own – you may choose something that reminds you of your own childhood, or of a favorite grandmother, for instance.
Many companies claim that they are “eco-friendly,” but no matter how much they try, their manufacturing processes still pollute the environment and use valuable natural resources, including the fuel burned for shipping. Vintage and Antique items already exist!
Most of us consider ourselves to be unique individuals: how better to create our own personal spaces than to blend vintage, antique and perhaps some new? One does not usually get bored with his/her personal statements.
Why buy a reproduction when you can buy the original?
Vintage and antique items are generally better made – usually by hand. Scuffs, nicks, a snag or pinhole are celebrated and each one tells a story of a past owner, a past era.
If you take care of your vintage and antique items, they will usually increase in value over time; buying these items can be likened to buying a new car: the new model’s price nosedives as soon as it is driven off the lot.
Join Retropolitan Fine Antiques & Vintage and Annapolis’ own Great Frogs Winery for an event featuring Prohibition era cocktails on Saturday, September 14th.
