Large White Oval Dining Table by Eero Saarinen, ca 1960s

July 10, 2015 in Uncategorized

Eero Saarinen’s tulip table and chairs were designed by the award winning architect and industrial designer in 1955 for the Knoll furniture company of New York City.  These pieces, considered “space age” at the time  because of their futuristic curves and artificial materials – the top shell is molded fiberglass with a reinforced, plastic bonded finish and the base is cast aluminum with a rilsan-coated finish to match the upper shell fiberglass,  making the whole unit appear as if it were one single unit –  are even today deemed classics of modern industrial design.

2015 is the 45th year we have celebrated Earth Day!

July 10, 2015 in Uncategorized

“2015 – Earth Day’s 45th anniversary – could be the most exciting year in environmental history. The year in which economic growth and sustainability join hands. The year in which world leaders finally pass a binding climate change treaty. The year in which citizens and organizations divest from fossil fuels and put their money into renewable energy solutions. These are tough issues but we know what’s at stake is the future of our planet and the survival of life on earth. On Earth Day we need you to take a stand so that together, we can show the world a new direction. It’s our turn to lead. So our world leaders can follow by example.” (excerpted from Earth Day Network)

…and remember:  Retropolitan can provide you with an exciting way to be green:  we showcase and resell vintage and antique items so you can reuse and repurpose!

Adrian Pearsall Side Table, Lamp and Tilt Back Chair, ca Late 1950s

July 10, 2015 in Uncategorized

Adrian Pearsall (1925-2011) was trained as an architect but quickly left that world for furniture design.  He founded Craft Associates in the early 1950s with his brother Richard.

Known for its mass-produced pieces at a medium price range, Craft Associates became known for its daring designs:  while Adrian Pearsall’s “look” began with the low, bow-front day bed, he soon established his ethos by using sculptural walnut and stunning colors and color combinations – often influenced by women’s fashions, for his pieces – often gondola sofas, tilt back chairs, free form tables.
