Plexiglass at Retropolitan!

March 5, 2012 in Lighting, Mid-century modern, Uncategorized

The Moss Manufacturing Company was established in San Francisco in 1937.  It originally produced traditional metal lighting with long-stemmed bases and a lamp shade.  World War II and the rationing of metal forced the company to come up with a new and innovative material with which to manufacture lamps:  Plexiglass!  With this new and unconventional material came new and unconventional designs.  The company plugged (no pun intended!) its new products as “conversation pieces,” and indeed they were, and still are.

White tulip table and chairs on the mid-century modern floor at Retropolitan

The “tulip chair” was originally designed for Knoll in the late 1950’s but rose to popularity with Star Trek in the early 1960’s on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise.  A smart sample of the industrial design, the curves and sleek lines of this set are still a favorite of interior designers looking to make a statement.  Stop by Retropolitan’s mid-century modern floor to see if this tulip table and chair set may just be the statement that you’re looking to make.
